Well, it’s finally time to play!

Most of the big projects are behind us now. Our friends Jim and Nancy stopped by for a visit, and we had such a great time together. Nancy and I spent a day at The Butchart Gardens—wandering through the gardens and enjoying afternoon tea. Wow. What an experience. Highly recommend.

While we were strolling around Victoria, the boatyard called and asked if they could launch our boat… in ten minutes. Sure! We hustled back, and there she was, waiting patiently in the water for us. We’d planned to stay at the dock for a while to make sure everything was watertight after the repairs. Once we were confident all was well, we climbed aboard, fired her up, and enjoyed a beautiful evening cruise back to the marina.

The next morning we took Jim and Nancy over to Salt Spring Island and were treated to an unexpected humpback whale sighting during our cruise. It stayed nearby entertaining us for a good 30 minutes. What a gift. If I ever stop marveling at the wildlife out here, it’s probably time to sell the boat.

After our friends headed home, we wrapped up a few final chores and pointed the bow toward the States—a mere three-hour run. We’re on our way to our annual Nordic Tug Rendezvous, and this year is especially exciting because it’s the first time we actually get to bring our boat to the big dance. (For anyone just tuning in: we bought a one-year cruising permit and then had to stay out of Washington waters for two years… and WE DID IT!)

We cleared customs using the app at the border. Sometimes they ask you to come in for an inspection; other times you’re approved right on the spot. This time we had a quick video interview with a customs agent and then we were off to one of our favorite places: Jones Island State Park. We arrived at just the right time, picked up a mooring ball, and by 3:30 the harbor was full. The sounds of summer drifted across the water—campfires crackling, kids laughing, dinghies buzzing back and forth. This is exactly what we signed up for.

Today we took a glorious hike and now we’re up on the flybridge soaking up the sunshine, enjoying a light breeze and excellent boat-and-people watching.

Tomorrow we’re thinking about heading to either James Island State Park or Eagle Harbor. We’ll see what the wind and weather have to say. We need to be in Friday Harbor by Wednesday.

Talk Soon.
