Juneau to Statter Harbor

Posted on July 19, 2024July 19, 2024 By Debbie Kochel
Alaska - Summer 2024

If you drive a car from Harris Harbor to Statter Harbor in Auke Bay, it is 10.9 miles. But, if you drive a boat, it is a little over 30 miles. We have heard horror stories of folks that have tried to take the shortcut and ended their boating season prematurely.

We woke up to glorious sunshine this morning! What a mood lifter. We walked over to the giant humpback whale statue and then over to Foodland for a few last minute fresh items mainly to soak up that vitamin D.

Juneau in the sunshine! The water is muddy due to all the runoff.

It was fantastic to see all the views we missed when we arrived to Juneau. It is a stunning area. We had a peaceful cruise and a lovely day in the sunshine.

This is where we saw the salmon spawning.

Statter Harbor transient section is first come, first served, so you drive around until you see an open spot, and it is yours. Glad we are buddy boating, as Cerise was docked lickety split and Rocky found a great spot for us and helped with our lines. We walked up to the Forbidden Peak Brewery for happy hour with Rocky and Tracy. They have NA beer on draft and bonus, it is delicious. Haha, so fickle, we were sitting in the sunshine and decided we were hot and moved to the shade.

Mendenhall Glacier greeted us when we arrived to Auke Bay.

We were going to go home and cook dinner after, but we didn’t want to waste the evening cooking instead of being on the flybridge enjoying the respite, so we had a picnic upstairs. Fresh fruit and veggies, cheese, crackers and hummus. The marina was abuzz with activity, kids on bikes, loaded dock carts going to and fro. Sounds of summer. We have to constantly remind ourselves that actually it is summer.

It has been a looooong time since we have wanted to sit upstairs for dinner.

We have decided to buddy boat with Cerise until we need to head off to Ketchikan to meet up with our friends, Jim and Nancy on August 9th. We both applied and were approved for short-term permits to enter Glacier Bay. We are headed to Hoonah for 2 nights as it is close to the entrance.

Same “view” as yesterday – drastically different in the fog

Glad we relished our day yesterday as it is raining this morning. We are energized, so it is okay.  Saturday through Thursday, the forecast tells us to expect periods of rain with occasional clear breaks. We’ll take it. I feel like when it does clear up – we appreciate the scenery so much more.

Time to hit the road.

Talk Soon.
