Wallace Island

Gulf Islands, Wallace

We packed a lunch and headed out. It was a bit frigid while we were going fast, but took way less time than I thought it would. We checked out both Princess and Conover Coves. We parked the dinghy at the dock in Conover Cove and headed up the trail. Wallace Island was a resort back in the day. There are a few buildings left. It is now a Marine Park.

The first stop was the iconic store where boaters hang handcrafted signs. Some were quite whitty, one that stood out was driftwood shaped like a boat and they fashioned ropes to look like sails. Creative! Although I knew about it, we didn’t come prepared. We did find a friend we knew. The temperature was perfect for a hike. We walked about 1.5 miles to a campground with a picnic table and had our lunch. It would be an idyllic spot to camp. “For your convenience, there is a pit toilet at Chivers point just 10 short minutes away.” Also, potable water is advertised. Whoopsie. The water is contaminated, so we closed the spigot permanently. Hope you brought your own.

We enjoyed our lunch and headed back. I was surprised we were the only ones on such a glorious day. Jim reminded me that it is Friday and still April. Oh, right. We got back and there was quite a party going on with some friends on the dock. It looks like about 4 buddy boats – in lawn chairs yukking it up. I love seeing people having a good time. The best sound is kids in a campground on a summer evening. If you could only bottle that.

We were going to make borscht, but we wanted to use the Instapot to pressure cook the short ribs. We need to run the generator for that. So, we decided we would cook the ribs during the next generator run. That left us with no dinner plans. There is a pizza place run out of someone’s home nearby. You need to call early enough so she can go shop for ingredients. That sounds like a pizza we would like! So, we called her up. No answer. We went through the cut to the pub instead. When we returned we had a voicemail from the pizza shop, she just had her hip done and was closed for 2.5 more weeks. She recommended we go to the pub.

We are going to do chores today. On the to-do list: make some water, wash the dinghy, scrub the cushions on the flybridge, pressure cook the spare ribs. We will more than likely head out tomorrow. The winds look fantastic. We need to find a grocery and somewhere to fill up our propane. Plus, the next adventure is calling. (aka new anchorage)

It looks like another brilliant day looming.

Talk Soon.
