Mergpijpijes and Mushy Peas

Vancouver Island

As promised, yesterday was pretty much shopping, laundry and chores. Jim scrubbed the boat down while I did the laundry.

But first! We stopped by Starbucks. We went and found a nice view to enjoy our coffees. There is a market by the Port of Sidney Marina (the one we are now staying at in June). What a fantastic market! This is a melting pot of cultures and that grocery store reflected all of them. We had a lot of fun exploring it. We found a can of mushy peas. We were looking for the real deal to make them ourselves (evidently, marrowfat peas). No such luck. We also found some mergpijpijes so had to buy those! A Dutch YouTuber we watch announces it is coffee time! in a sing-song voice and has a latte and a mergpijpijes. Ours are miniature in comparison, though the serving says 1. Hm. They are a marzipan roll.

The washroom has a Dyson wash and dry combo. EVERY time, the bubbles from the sink blow up on me when the dryer is turned on. I finally figured out: wash hands in one sink and then move over to the next to dry them.

We then stop by Canadian Tire. I was asking Jim earlier what the Canadian version of Walmart is. This is it. Along with Automobile stuff, the other side of the enormous store is filled with every type of ware that a Walmart would carry. We found a few items we needed and a few that I did not know we needed.

Note the bubbles in the sink and then on my jacket – mergpijpijes – mushy peas – those views though!

The marina supplies taxi vouchers to and from town and the airport. We got a taxi yesterday to pick up the rental car. We told her Enterprise, and she dropped us at the airport. At the airport, we discover we have to call Enterprise for a shuttle to come pick us up. It ended up being quite the ordeal, so, we canceled the taxi for the return trip. The car rental dropped us off at the McTavish Exchange so we could catch a bus. The bus arrived within minutes of our arrival and whisked us (close) to the marina.

The laundry was nice! Six washers and six dryers! The wash only took 30 minutes and the dryer was 48. That’s a 20-minute bonus compared to Anacortes. Also, with the exchange rate it was only $4.50 a load. Not bad.

The goal is to leave by 10 am. We’ll stop and pump out, and get some gas for Don Yonko. It is going to take 2 hours. I am going to try out our new Insta360 for the trip over. I’ll post the video on our YouTube channel and give you a link. It will be long, boring, and unedited. But you can watch it at double speed and get an idea how our cruise was.

As promised, the clouds have moved in. BC broke all kinds of weather records this past week. I’m glad we were here to enjoy it. Today the real adventure begins. This is the part of the story where we get good at anchoring.

Wish us luck.

Talk Soon.
