Jim and I walked to Safeway. It is shy of 2 miles. It was a nice walk. Very serene and peaceful. That was before the first cruise ship arrived and then it was pure mayhem. We took the free shuttle to the marina laden with groceries.
We then walked back to the marine store (of course). We were going to buy a halibut harpoon and a salmon fishing rod. We then came to our senses (we would have had to bring these ginormous things on the bus or walk back doing our best not to stab someone.) We’ll shop in Wrangell.
Before we knew it, it was time to meet up at the Eagle’s Nest for pizza and our briefing. The tram is broken, so we climbed the stairs. It wasn’t too bad.
We rounded out the evening at the timber carnival. It is a lumberjack competition. They threw axes, sawed logs, ran an obstacle course, climbed poles, and ran across log booms. It was a charity event; they squeezed folks together and had to turn a bunch away.
We had a fun Fourth of July. We watched some of the Waggoner group run in a local race, enjoyed a parade, ate a phenomenal lunch at the NY Cafe, had some (free) root beer floats, cheered for the rubber duck race, and then came back to the boat for some games. The crowds were unreal.
Dan and Valerie took a cab from their marina and along with the crew from Dancing Bear, we sat up on the flybridge swapping stories and waiting for dark. (that is a tall order here) Meanwhile, the wind kicked up a notch here and there and had a bite, so we all added a few more layers. We had some cozy blankets and donned winter coats. Fireworks dotted the town while we waited. Several false alarms, maybe this is them. Nope. The problem was, we were unclear what time they actually started and which direction we should be looking. Dan and Valerie called it at 11. As they were leaving, it was obvious, the show had started at 11:05. We did have a pretty good vantage point and enjoyed them.
Mike is kind to us, we are not leaving until 8 am for Meyers Chuck.
Talk Soon.
