Cannery Cove to Petersburg

Alaska - Summer 2024

It’s a good thing that we took a weather day as the freshwater pump finally gave up the ghost. We have been calling it Moaning Myrtle for a very long time. We had a spare on board, of course, they quit making the direct replacement, so we had a suitable sub that had Jim scratching his head for a good portion of the day, but success!

After things had quieted down after the flotilla left, we watched a mama and her cub for a very long time. The sun had peeked out and they were just mozying, enjoying their afternoon as much as we were enjoying watching them. What a treat.

As we were sitting there, some winds came out of nowhere! We had some super strong gusts! Nice test during daylight hours how well we are set. Not so much fun in the middle of the night.

Just Miss Marlie and SV Bella left in the anchorage

Petersburg has some pretty strong currents, so you need to try to time your arrival near slack for your stay at the marina. That put us underway at 5 am. I have never seen so much mud on the chain when we pulled up the anchor. Wow. Now it is all over the deck as a result of rinsing off the chain. I was going to rinse off the deck as we were getting underway, but Jim said we could do it at the dock at Petersburg. That ended up being a good decision, as it was not as calm as we were expecting in Frederick Sound and the decks got a good rinse-off simply from the waves spraying over the bow. Jim washed off the salt and the little bit of remaining mud when we arrived.

Heading out – Blue sky peeking out!

I am sad to be leaving this area, as we started seeing a lot of whales once we hit Frederick Sound. I think we saw one maybe two a day before then.

The cruise got more and more calm and peaceful the closer we got to Petersburg. Guess who was behind us! Meteor!! I’m curious if we end up together at Wrangell together as well.

Starting to calm down and become a beautiful cruise

We took showers and schlepped our laundry up to the laundromat. We have not been using our washing machine much because we do not have a dryer and we had 11.5 inches of rain in July! We had 5 loads of laundry. We brought the laundry home, went to Kito’s for a couple of beers and then headed over to Inga’s for dinner. They have such good food there! Those were honestly the best egg rolls we have ever eaten. I had a halibut cheek salad and Jim had a shrimp burger. Mmm. Mmm. Good.

North Harbor, Petersburg AK

The sun came out and we had the clearest of blue skies! Supposed to be 80 degrees here by Sunday. It looks like the Cearleys might get some good weather when they are here. The 10-day forecast calls for one day of rain, the rest will be partly cloudy. The weather is very temperamental here, so that could change on a dime.

Inga’s

We are leaving at noon to time the narrows – we should arrive in Wrangell sometime after 5:30pm. We have a potential stall we are checking out, fueling up and heading out the next morning. We’ll stay at Meyers Chuck and then on to Ketchikan on Sunday – so we potentially can meet up with Rocky and Tracy for a proper goodbye! They are hanging out waiting for a weather window for Dixon Entrance. It’s nice that we have the wait, the fog has been pretty dense this morning and seems to be burning off as I write this.

Result of everything being ferried in. A 12-pack of NA beer is $32. Um. No thanks.

Talk Soon.
