We called BC Transit and reported Jim’s lost phone. The voicemail informed us that they would only call if they had it. It was raining, so we went into Victoria, our first stop was Trotac (Canada’s version of Fisheries Supply). While we were there, we got a call from BC Transit, they had Jim’s phone. We told them we would be there before the end of the day. We checked to see how far it was and it was a 7-minute walk. Lucky!
After that, we took the bus to the Amazon locker. Both items we ordered were there! If we hadn’t missed two buses by less than a minute earlier in the day, I would suggest that we buy a lottery ticket. (I know, the plural of bus looks wrong in the previous sentence, but trust me. It’s right.)
This is how easy the bus system is here. My Google timeline from yesterday. We paid two paper tickets each for a day pass. The 75 takes you straight downtown and back. We even managed to get back in time for Butchart to be open (they don’t turn into Butchart if the gates are closed, so it is a little bit more of a walk). The only unnerving thing: will your dinghy still be there when you get back? (there is an abandoned dinghy on shore that we would resort to borrowing if necessary) Jim is going to figure out some sort of lock for the motor so that if someone takes it, they can only go in circles. Just keeping honest people honest.
You have to be super quick on these buses! A family of four (with two young children) were getting off, after the little girl exited, the doors shut- Mom, Dad, and her brother were still on the bus! They seemed like they did not speak English, so a lot of folks called to the bus driver to open the back door. He didn’t hear. He started to pull away and the boy started WAILING. The bus driver heard that and stopped. The family was quickly reunited. Everyone on the bus laughed. (in relief, it was tense for a moment there)
With our errands done, we took the bus downtown and had lunch at Murchie’s. We split a sandwich so we each could have a dessert. It was delicious! We like a little urban delight now and then.
I washed the towels and hung them outside on the flybridge before we left. It rained on them all day. At least they are fresh.
During our visit with Paul and Elaine, we discovered that we can only be anchored here 2 weeks because it is a provincial park (which is about what we planned, so good thing). The weather is supposed to be iffy, so we are going to head over to Montague Harbor on Galiano after this. I have heard that has good protection as well.
We are supposed to get a few good blows over the next couple of days. This is the next baby step in our anchoring process. Now to learn to trust the ground tackle. That’s the goal.
We are going to pack a picnic lunch and take the dinghy over to McKenzie Bight today because the sun will be shining.
Washing a load this morning, doing some dishes and we’re off.
