Aug 21 – (South side of Jones Island) The wind is shifting so we are moving to the North side of the island. There is a dock, and 3 mooring balls. 4 people are rafted up. One lone sailboat. We took a cruise around Roche Harbor – which was a gorgeous area. We plan on making that a destination next week.
Look how close this guy anchored to us!! (picture 4)
Aug 22 – Woke up to alarms this morning. What in the world? We are pretty new to the power management of this boat and we ran the batteries down too low. Fired up the generator, and charged up the batteries along with all the other stuff we needed to charge. We took a fun hike at Jones Island. I fell about 1.25 miles into the 2-mile hike and sprained my ankle. Thankfully I could still put some weight on it – we made it back to the boat just fine. It did bother me for a few weeks after that though. I started using my trekking poles after that.
Aug 23 – Hung some things up on the walls. Made dinner first thing in the morning so we wouldn’t have to do it later when it was so hot. We played 5 crowns, took a dinghy ride, and read. Had the BIGGEST WAKE! Things were FLYING everywhere. Lesson: keep the buttons on the cupboards locked at all times! We’re headed to Anacortes tomorrow.
Aug 24 – Got up at 4:40 am – beautiful calm cruise to Anacortes. The smoke has moved in though. We did laundry and washed the boat. We decided to shop tomorrow so we spent one night in the marina. Went to the Wheelhouse for dinner. There was a “Navigator” rendezvous. They seem like a fun group. Everyone had their boats decked out in a tiki theme.
Aug 25 – Did some provisioning – we ordered a Takacat. We saw it at the boat show and thought it was pretty cool. It is an open bowed dinghy. We still laugh to this day as they called it a “dry ride”. Even though we really enjoyed using it for the summer, I have YET to have a dry ride! We need room for more people. My sister is coming for 10 days. There is no way we all fit in the baby. We met a really nice couple from Tsawwassen. Gabor and Desi aboard a Hunter 38 sailboat named “Nauti Dream”. They are Canadian and keep their boat in the US at Point Roberts. They told us about a marina that we should winter in and for the life of us we could not remember the name of the marina. We actually drove to Point Roberts so we could put a note on their boat asking them to call us and tell us where that marina was. You have to drive through Canada and back into the US to go to Point Roberts. Try explaining THAT to both border crossing guards. You’re doing what?? Imagine our chagrin when we got to the marina at Point Roberts and the gates were locked!
Aug 26 – Left Anacortes for Reid Harbor. We were nervous as it was late on a summer Saturday. Would we find a spot? We get there – two free mooring buoys! Joy! Once we got up close to them they were labeled private. drats. There was a public float – there was one side of it free. I asked the person occupying the other side of the float if this was a private space. He said nope, need help with your lines? YES!! Turns out they were a LOVELY family. His name was Angus. He had two kids that were absolute cards. His parents were there as well. They had a GrandBanks named “Iris Jade”. We ran into them a few weeks later in town at a local tavern and ended up eating with them. His name is Bruce but I cannot for the life of me remember her name. If someone comes across this blog and knows her name, please comment below! They were big fisher folks and gave us some of their salmon for dinner. That was so thoughtful and it was really good.
Aug 27 – Still at Reid Harbor. There are lots of seals and otters in this harbor. They are fun to watch. We put the Takacat together. Took a spin. A sea lion was swimming VERY close to us. Alarming. It was so hot JIM (yes! Jim!!) sat in the water on shore up to his neck – and even dunked his head! The water here takes your breath away, even when it is hot. There was a wedding on a flybridge close by. Sweet.
That’s a wrap for this week.
Talk Soon.
