Nanaimo to Comox

Flotilla

We left right on time this morning, 6:30 am. We were in the Strait of Georgia most of the trip. There was a high wind warning, but the wind was not against the current, which is a big plus. We are not good at judging the wave height and period, so we asked the others. 3 feet with brief periods. But we were taking the waves on the bow, so not uncomfortable.

Leaving Nanaimo

Once we hit Baynes Sound, it was dead calm, sunny and gorgeous! There is a ferry here that has a traffic light! We like this feature instead of constantly on the lookout wondering. It is a cable ferry and therefore dangerous to pass when underway. We did have to stop for it, but it wasn’t too long and we were off!

Waves splashing over the bow

We arrived around 2:30 and found a good spot and anchored. We usually anchor in 20 – 40 feet. We’re in 60 feet. Good practice because from what I understand, the anchorages only get deeper the farther north we go!

Baynes Sound was so gorgeous and calm

We dinghied over to the marina to get our daily briefing. Our first big switch of the trip. Instead of going to Campbell River we are going across the Strait to Squirrel Cove. Remember when we went to Desolation Sound and we skipped Squirrel Cove because it was a former logging operation? I asked if they had any troubles there. I guess the last report of a snag was in 2019 and the closer you anchor to the lagoon the higher the chance. Armed with good information, we think we won’t have a problem. We are changing itineraries because we would have 4 knots of current against us for hours and some of our boats cannot go faster than 7 knots.

Now this is what we signed up for!

With the change, we are now going through the triple rapids. Which frankly, I am thrilled about. These require you to arrive at the 3rd rapid at slack, so you go through the other two a little early. It’s fine and dandy to read about stuff, but to actually have a guide to take you through the first time. Win/win.

Heading to Comox

After dinner, we were going to go take a walk on the spit, but there was not a dinghy dock and so we decided to go walk the docks in the marina. We got in a little visit with our flotilla mates, which was nice. After Squirrel Cove, we have 3 nights at docks, and going out to dinner, so I’m sure we’ll get in our share of visiting in then.

We were treated to a gorgeous sunset after this shower

We are leaving at 7 am sharp today, so we better get a move on.

Talk Soon.

Really enjoying hearing about your adventures. We haven’t heard of the triple rapids but it sounds like it was a no brainer for you guys! Looking forward to tomorrow’s update!

Hi Joanne, We are going through the triple rapids today! That is Yuculta – Gillard – Dent and you need to arrive at Dent at slack. We are weighing anchor today at 5:30 am from Squirrel Cove. Ports and Passes gives pretty thorough instructions. I’m more concerned about getting safely into Blind Channel Resort. Because of the timing of going through the rapids, we cannot arrive at slack and there will be about 4 knots of current while docking. This does not sound fun 😛 We are reassured that there will be lots of hands to help. A few prayers in our direction couldn’t hurt.

      Hi Debbie!

Early morning start, but I’m confident you guys will do just fine when docking! You got this. Beautiful pictures in today’s post. Enjoy the beautiful weather.
